Summer activities, secret gardens, asian hornets, free shoes, and a pump track!

Developing Our Community

Have you enjoyed our Community Garden? Eaten dinner at Food Truck Friday? Brought your kids along to a Wilder Wednesday, or our Easter Trail on Meadowside Rec?

Well, let me introduce you to Katie Mattingly, the woman behind all our favourite things about Whiteley.

Our Community Development Officer, Katie, has been with us for almost a year now, and it’s time to shine a light on all the amazing work she has been doing for our community.

This month alone, Katie is responsible for 15 great events for us to enjoy, including free children’s activities every Wednesday and Friday, and a Summer Trail, inspired by the success of the Easter Trail earlier this year!

I sat down with Katie to pick her brain about what she does, what motivates her, and what we can expect in the future!

What is a Community Development Officer?

Katie: I see my role as helping residents of North Whiteley feel like, “There’s always something happening here that I can enjoy.” That’s the essence of what I aim to achieve - making things happen. Whether it’s organising events, leading community projects, or creating opportunities for people to connect, my focus is on making a difference to residents in North Whiteley if they would like it.

Why did you decide to set up free Fun Day Fridays in August? What is it, and what can people expect to find? Is there anything else on for kids & families over the summer holidays?

Katie: This year, I’ve worked hard to put together a wide range of fun, free activities for families to enjoy throughout the summer. I know that the school holidays can sometimes feel long, expensive, and even a little lonely - so I wanted to make sure there’s always a warm welcome and a place to be.

At Barn Farm, we’ve got family-friendly events every Wednesday and Friday - all completely free!

Wilder Wednesdays, in partnership with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, take place every Wednesday during the school holidays. They will be hosting nature-themed craft sessions from 10am to 12pm. It’s a great way for children to connect with the outdoors and get creative!

Fun Day Fridays are hosted by Whiteley Town Council, with brilliant free entertainment for kids, designed to be engaging and enjoyable.

There are also one-off special events too - including the Skate Jam and our "Around the World" Summer Trail at Meadowside Rec on August 16th.

Now, if none of those are your thing, keep an eye out for the free 'Cycle with Confidence' sessions (see Barn Farm section) - a perfect chance to build cycling skills together as a family.

There’s so much to enjoy without spending a penny - a brilliant way to get out of the house, meet new friends, and make the most of the summer!

Why the shake-up with Food Truck Fridays this month? What can we expect?

Katie: Food Truck Friday was an idea dreamt up by Kayleigh from Louleigh’s Sweet Treats and me. At the time, we had no idea how it would be received or what the residents would think. As it turns out, people really love great food-and a good excuse to get together!

Thanks to Kayleigh’s local connections, we were able to bring in some of the best independent food suppliers around - each one passionate about supporting local business and the community. For example, Three Cuts has an incredible relationship with their butcher, and Fries Love? They literally live right here on the estate!

With over 200 people now attending each month, we thought it was time to do something a little extra special for the summer. And so, August Food Truck Fridays were born. Okay, maybe not the catchiest name - but it does what it says on the tin! Every Friday in August (except the 22nd, due to Victorious Festival), we’ll be hosting two rotating food trucks, a bar, and live music.

The event will still run from 5 - 8pm to keep things neighbour-friendly, and we’re encouraging attendees to bring a chair, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere.

What is your favourite project you've worked on for the council so far?

Katie: My favourite project so far has to be the transformation of the community garden and Barn Farm Community Centre. I still remember walking into what was then just a tarmac compound with a dull grey box, on a rainy day - it was hard to imagine what it could become. Now, it’s a vibrant hub of community life. What was once a car park is now a flourishing garden, complete with festoon lights and picnic benches - all funded through grants - and that transformation fills me with pride.

The centre is now alive with activity. Community groups meet, grow, connect, and support one another there. Every month at Food Truck Friday, over 200 people come through the gates to enjoy delicious, fresh meals prepared by some of the best local chefs. I especially love holding meetings outside on the benches, surrounded by buzzing bees, and sometimes finishing the day by picking a cheeky tomato or two. It’s a space that truly reflects the power of community and what we can achieve together.

Any parting thoughts?

Katie: It is my first year as your Community Development Officer, and there will be more challenges and opportunities to come. I really want to make sure that I am delivering things that residents want, so please do feedback and talk to me about your ideas.

Rest in Peace, Pat, and thank you for all you’ve done for Whiteley

Pat Wright, former Chairman of Whiteley Parish Council

It is with sadness that I am writing to let you know that a previous Chairman of Whiteley Council, Pat Wright, passed away on 30th June.

Pat was a councillor for the inaugural meeting of Whiteley Parish Council in May 2003. He was Chairman of the Council from 2005 until 2007, having previously been Chairman of Finance and Chairman of Recreation and General Purposes Committees.

Despite struggling with chronic lymphatic leukaemia and Crohn’s disease, Pat remained very supportive of the Council and attended many meetings as a member of the public. His advice was always sound and logical, and paved the way for where we are today.

Whiteley has grown since those early days and is now a thriving Town, and much of the early groundwork was under the leadership of Pat.

His contribution to the community cannot be underestimated, and he will never be forgotten.

Thank you, Pat. May you rest in peace.

- Cllr Mike Evans, Chairman, Whiteley Town Council

Beekeepers need your help! - Stay vigilant

You’ve no doubt heard of the Asian hornet - the invasive species that is threatening our native bees and other insects, as well as posing a health risk to those with allergies to hornet or wasp stings.

First spotted in the UK in 2016, their presence has grown substantially, with an unprecedented number of sightings in 2023. All of us need to take action and help organisations like the FDBKA and the National Bee Unit to trace and contain the problem.

How to identify an Asian hornet

Asian hornets have a few easy markers you can look for to identify them. More detail can be seen in the graphics provided, but in summary, Asian hornets are a little smaller than European hornets, have yellow legs (changing from black halfway down), black heads with orange faces, a mainly black thorax and abdomen, with one obvious thick yellow band near the rear.

A comparison of asian & european hornets
an annotated image of an asian hornet

What to do if you spot an Asian hornet

The best thing you can do to help stop the spread of Asian hornets is to trap and photograph them, without killing them.

To trap and photograph a hornet, put some sugary liquid in the bottom of a tray or tupperware to entice the hornet to feed. Then place the lid or a cover over the top to secure it.

Download the Asian Hornet Watch App or fill out the online form to report the sighting (links below).

Keeping the hornet trapped and alive allows operatives to release and follow the hornet to its nest, which can then be destroyed. It is unlawful to release the hornet yourself.

Pump Track for Whiteley

a young person using a bmx bike on a pump track

Young people have asked the Town Council to provide a pump track.

A feasibility study is being carried out to site a track on Meadowside Rec. Funding has yet to be identified. Full consultation will take place in due course!

Not sure what a “pump track” is? We weren’t either. Here’s a wonderful explanation.

Grant to Home Start

Whiteley Town Council has agreed to make a grant of £1,300 to Home Start for 2025-26.

Home Start supports local families in need. Trained volunteers assist parents and carers on a one-to-one basis to gain confidence, access necessary services, develop coping strategies, whilst reducing levels of isolation through invitations to weekly group sessions. It costs approximately £1,300 to support each family.

650 children in 381 families were looked after by Home Start last year - including four families in Whiteley. There are also three volunteers in the Whiteley area, and we are tremendously grateful for their important work!

Need funding? Apply for a grant below. Local community groups, voluntary organisations and sports/recreational clubs of a non-commercial nature may apply to Whiteley Town Council (the Council) for grant support.

Any grant application must be seen to be of benefit to residents of Whiteley Town.

Steve’s Memorial Bench for Meadowside

Steve Thomas, former first team manager

Whiteley Town Council has agreed to a request from Whiteley Wanderers FC for a memorial bench on Meadowside in memory of a former club member.

Everyone at Whiteley Wanderers FC are devastated to hear the sad news that former First Team Manager Steve Thomas has suddenly passed away.

Steve together with his sons Jack and Lewey have been involved with the club all the way through our youth section into to men’s football.

Steve’s most memorable role was as first team manager where he led his team through back to back promotions making history for the club winning the Southampton Premier League and propelling us into the Hampshire League and County football in 2021.

Steve was a big character with a big heart, who was always looking out for his players, making them be the best they could be in every game they played.

The whole club sends our condolences and love to his wife Beccy and sons Jack and Lewey during this difficult time.

Steve, you will forever be a Whiteley Wanderer ⚽❤

Statement from Whiteley Wanderers FC Chairman, Steve Davies

Everyone at Whiteley Town Council would like to take this opportunity to offer our deepest condolences to Steve’s family, friends, and to all the Whiteley Wanderers. May his memory be a blessing.

What’s new in Whiteley?

Goodbye, Poundland

On July 21st, Poundland Whiteley closed its doors for the last time. This is just one of 68 potential closures around the country, as part of a restructuring effort by new owners.

We wish the former staff at Poundland all the best, and thank them for their years of friendly service.

Drainage for the Meadowside Skatepark

Whiteley Town Council has agreed to install drainage measures at the skatepark to reduce the flooding issues in very wet weather.

We hope this will enable people to enjoy the facilities at Meadowside in all weather conditions!

Another Fire at Tynefield Caravan Park

On Monday, 21st July, a fire started at the abandoned Tynefield Caravan Park site. Luckily, several local teens were on hand to call the fire brigade.

The boys witnessed another group of teens fleeing the site on bikes, who they believed to be responsible for the incident. Unfortunately, the police did not attend.

A while ago, Whiteley Town Council asked Winchester City Council to implement an S215 order to the owner of the land, which would force them to clear up the site. This was refused on the grounds of the site’s location and geography. Unfortunately, as we predicted, fires and fly tipping are still occurring.

See our April newsletter for more information on this decision by WCC.

We have a vacancy!

An extra bit of Sunshine…

a flourishing garden
dorli stood proudly next to a sunflower nearly twice her height

Whiteley’s best-kept secret is our community garden, located at Barn Farm Community Centre, and maintained by Dorothee (Dorli) & Bill Carr, our very own green-fingered power couple.

However, looking after her own garden, the community centre, and helping friends and neighbours isn’t enough for Dorli - she’s taken to guerrilla gardening! What was once a bland, sad corner is now a haven for pollinators and passers-by alike.

Can you find Dorli’s secret garden?

(Hint - it’s in the northern half of the development)

Allotments

The first allotment site, Allotment 1, has been completed for some time and is waiting for the developer consortium to complete the legal work to hand over to the Town Council.

Work has yet to start on the Allotment sites 2 and 3, but an update on this is expected shortly.
